Our family has been making quality ice cream in this area since 1898, starting in the Don Valley area of Sheffield and locating to Chesterfield in 1925. Like our heritage, our local community is very important to us.
Frederick's of Chesterfield have been makers and purveyors of the Original 1898 Blend of award winning real ice cream for four generations and is still a family owned business.
The origins of the company can be traced back to Parma, Northern Italy in the late 1800's. The business was started by our great-grand father Angelo who came to England from Italy around 1870 and started his ice cream business in the Paradise Street / Meadow Lane area in Sheffield in the late 1890's after arriving from his home town in Italy.
Our association with Chesterfield started back in 1925, when Angelo's son John, who traded as John Russell followed in the family footsteps and moved the business to Chesterfield from Sheffield in 1925, starting from the Star & Garter Yard, Lower Pavement. Then moving to Old Hall Road, Brampton, setting up at number 88 in August 1947.
John Russell's daughter Pauline later married Bruno Frederick, whose grandfather was in the ice cream industry in Atherton in the1900's. Bruno carried on the tradition and the company eventually became known as Frederick's in the 1950's.
Bruno and Pauline Frederick are now Senior Executive Partners in the company along with their son John.
John Frederick is the Head Managing Partner of the business and is responsible for running the company.
Throughout the years the company has established a reputation for consistently producing high quality real ice cream. The company has won many awards and accolades for the Original 1898 Blend it produces including being six times “Silver Challenge Cup” winners for the best ice cream in Britain.
Silver and Bronze medals have been won, together with over 70 diplomas, presented by The National Ice Cream Alliance at its annual conference.
This highly prestigious competition is open to all ice cream manufacturers throughout the British Isles and is seen as the Benchmark for the industry.
In 2004 the competitions were held in Blackpool and over 450 samples were judged from which Frederick's Original 1898 Blend of Vanilla flavour was judged to be the best in its category and was awarded the first prize Gold Medal and .
It went on to compete against other Gold medal winners from other classes, ultimately winning the most prestigious accolade of all and was judged to be the “Supreme Champion of Champions “ for the 2003/2004 season.
